The snow is officially here.
And the snow is finally coming.
The city of Halifax is expecting up to six inches of snow on Friday, but that will change depending on how much moisture falls.
The snow is expected to start falling in the city around 9 a.m.
The forecast is to shift back towards normal around 10 a.ms.
By the end of the day, the forecast for Halifax is likely to be closer to two inches of fresh snow, according to the National Weather Service.
The city is also expecting another inch or so of snow by the end to Saturday.
“We’ve seen snow showers over the last few days and the last couple of days, so we’ll have a bit more of a mix of precipitation and snowfall on Friday and then possibly more late into the evening,” said Rob Brierley, a meteorologist with the weather service.
It’s a rare occurrence for Nova Scotia to get that much snow, but Brierle said the city has had this type of snowfall for years.
“In the past, it was a fairly regular thing that was just snowing a lot and then the snow melted off in the summertime,” he said.
“The snow on this side of the harbour will be the same as we’ve had all winter.”
There are also some other snow conditions in the area.
The Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change is predicting the heaviest rainfall on Friday morning, with up to 15 millimetres expected at various locations.
“The main areas that we’re seeing heavy rainfall are along the coast, in the lower elevations of the coast and inland, particularly along the south coast,” said spokeswoman Katie Gorman.
The heavy rainfall could last until Saturday morning, when temperatures will be about 1 C cooler, but rain will still be expected to fall for the next few days.
There will also be some sunshine this afternoon and evening.
In fact, it will be so sunny that it could be possible to get to a hotel before the snow falls.
In the coming days, the weather system is expected bring snow to the east coast and north of Cape Breton.
There are also areas in the western part of the province where it’s expected to be possible for more snowfall, with the heaviest amounts expected in the south and eastern parts of the region.
