It is forecast to last through the weekend.
The weather system is expected to dump as much as 4 feet (1.5 metres) of snow on the city of Flint and several towns along the Mississippi River in the Upper Peninsula, as well as the cities of Rochester and Buffalo.
A tornado watch was issued for parts of northern New York and northern Connecticut from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning, with wind gusts of up to 65 miles per hour (100 km/h).
The tornado watch covers the southern parts of the state, including parts of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, as it moves westward.
The tornado watches are in place as a result of several tornado watches issued on Wednesday and Thursday.
The latest in the system will likely occur Friday morning, when a storm system that may be similar to a “snowstorm” develops in the upper Midwest.
